R.R. WALSTON 5K WALK/RUN, BENEFITING SICKLE CELL AWARENESS MONTH, TAKING PLACE SEPT. 25 AT BACHMAN LAKE

The Brothers of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc., internationally have designated Saturday, Sept. 25, as “Sigma National Day of Service.” Additionally, September is Sickle Cell Awareness Month.

On that day, the Omicron Sigma Chapter of Phi Beta Sigma will not only raise awareness and funding for sickle cell anemia but also honor the life of a beloved brother and individual. The Omicron Sigma Chapter will host its inaugural “R.R. Walston 5K Walk/Run” at Bachman Lake (3500 W. Northwest Highway) in Dallas from 10 a.m until 2 p.m.

Reginald R. Walston, a former Omicron Sigma Chapter president and an esteemed graduate of North Carolina A&T State University, He served on multiple boards within the fraternity and was active with NC A&T before he passed away in October 2015.

The first-ever “R.R. Walston 5K Walk/Run” will feature prizes awarded to first-, second- and third-place finishers. Advanced registration is $25 per participant, which includes a commemorative T-shirt and identification badge. Team discounts are available for groups of five or more participants.

A percentage of proceeds will be donated to several local sickle cell anemia-related causes and organizations. Additionally, sponsorship packages are available, ranging from $250 on up. All sponsorships will be tax-deductible.

Activities On Site During the R.R. Walston 5K Walk/Run:
BLOOD DRIVE:
Carter BloodCare will be available to accept blood donations (advance registration required).

SICKLE CELL TRAIT TESTING:
The Marc Thomas Sickle Cell Association will be conducting FREE sickle cell trait testing.

BONE MARROW DONOR REGISTRY SIGN-UP:
The Marc Thomas Sickle Cell Association will be conducting FREE bone marrow donor registry sign-ups.

CAROL’S PROMISE:
Carol’s Promise will share relevant information regarding sickle cell anemia, including information on how to advocate within your own community.

FOOD/MUSIC/PICNIC:
A picnic with food and music will take place during and following the conclusion of the 5K walk/run. All ages are welcome.
